Drop Strategies and Queuing Mechanisms for Differentiation

The Internet architecture is currently being extended to support differentiated services. These extensions allow assignment of different levels of drop precedence to IP packets. With precedence levels, isolated forwarding of in profile packets can be offered. When offering such differentiated forwarding, it is important that the utilization of congested links does not get degraded due to effects of providing the differentiation. Multiple levels of drop precedence can be provided with queuing mechanisms. We show, through simulations, that the drop strategy used by queuing mechanisms providing differentiation can affect link utilization and the loss-rate at congested links. When excess packets are dropped as they arrive, link utilization is less and loss-rate higher than when excess packets are dropped from within the queue. By dropping packets from within the queue, similar loss-rate and link utilization can be achieved as without differentiation.
